The two metros carry the academic centers, the children's and specialty services, and the deepest per diem pools, with Norman, Edmond, Broken Arrow and Stillwater feeding the same labor markets. Lawton, Enid, Muskogee and Ardmore anchor smaller regions. Reduced schedules in these places usually take the form of clinic sessions, ambulatory and infusion days, internal float or weekend commitment lines, and urgent care shifts that fit around another job.
Tribal health systems operate substantial clinic and hospital networks across the eastern and southern parts of the state and hire nurses at a range of hour commitments. Rural counties elsewhere rely on critical access hospitals and community health centers, several of which have closed services in recent years, so a clinician available two days a week fills a genuine hole. Energy work supports occupational health in the northwest and southeast, and correctional and public health clinics run fixed daytime schedules statewide.

The compact license, in place since 2020
Oklahoma has issued multistate licenses since the start of 2020. Where Oklahoma is your primary residence and you hold the multistate version, practice in other member states needs no further application, and every neighbor except Colorado's northern reach is inside the compact, including Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas and New Mexico. Handy if you live near the Texas line or in the northeast corner.
The privilege is tied to residence, so moving your primary home changes which board holds your license. Practice is governed by the state where the patient is, video visits included. Nothing similar operates yet for advanced practice, so prescriptive authority remains state by state, and a practitioner adding a neighbor applies there in the usual way.
Prescribing rules that shifted in late 2025
AANP has placed Oklahoma in the restricted category, the mechanism being physician supervision attached to prescriptive authority rather than to practice generally. That picture changed on the first of November 2025, when a law took effect allowing advanced practice nurses who have completed a substantial block of supervised prescribing practice, counted in the thousands of hours, to seek recognition from the board of nursing to prescribe without a supervisory agreement. A malpractice insurance minimum is attached to that recognition.
Read the practical effect carefully if your hours are low. Practitioners who have not yet reached the hour threshold still need a supervising physician for prescribing, and finding one willing to cover a two-session week is the same problem it has always been. Those who have crossed it can staff a small clinic or a telehealth panel without negotiating that arrangement. Confirm your own status with the board before you rely on either version, since the change is recent and the category may be reclassified.
The preceptor shortage students here run into
Psychiatric mental health is the scarcest population in Oklahoma, and rural behavioral health capacity is thin enough that students routinely travel to Tulsa or Oklahoma City for a rotation. Primary care hours exist but are competitive in the metros, where practices may already host students from more than one school. Pediatrics and women's health are difficult in the western half of the state.
You do not need a connection to a particular school to precept. What a program checks is the license, the certification and whether the site suits the rotation, and it is the program that decides what portion of the hours may take place over video. That decision never sits with the preceptor. Where a school permits remote work, a telehealth session earns the student the same credit as an office visit.
What a block of student hours pays
The preceptor picks the figure. A network band sets the edges. It is visible before acceptance. A block comes to 120 hours. That rate is what it pays. You qualify if the license is clean, the certification matches the population your student is studying, and two years have gone by since you earned it. Across a fifteen week term the arithmetic is roughly eight hours weekly, which most people schedule as one clinic day. Hold a master's degree while teaching or supervising, and education and leadership practica open to you instead, with hours covering projects, instruction and unit operations rather than prescribing.
Oklahoma does have a preceptor tax credit
This state runs a preceptor income tax credit, one of the handful in the country, administered by the health care workforce training commission rather than by the tax authority alone. Advanced practice registered nurses are among the licensed professionals who can apply, a qualifying rotation is defined as 160 hours in the aggregate, the credit is claimed per rotation with a larger amount available once you pass the third, and no more than ten rotations a year can be claimed.
Two cautions before you count on it. Programs of this kind commonly turn on whether the preceptor was otherwise compensated, and the terms are set by the commission rather than by anything on this site, so read the current year's rules and application before assuming a paid block qualifies. Take the question, your 1099 and your rotation records to whoever prepares your return.

Does the state preceptor tax credit apply to a paid block?
That is a question for the workforce training commission and your tax preparer, not for a website. Credits of this type often require that the preceptor received no other payment for the teaching, and the program sets its own definitions, hour thresholds and application deadlines each year. Read the current terms before you plan around the credit, and keep records of every rotation you complete.
Does precepting require a supervising physician here?
Precepting itself does not require one. Whatever arrangement already governs your prescribing continues unchanged when a student is with you, since the student practices under your supervision and does not extend your authority. Your employer does have to agree to a learner on the premises, and the school signs an affiliation document with the site, which the network organizes.
Can I keep a multistate license if I move to Texas?
Multistate privileges track your primary residence, so a move means applying to Texas for licensure by endorsement while Oklahoma becomes a former home state. Both states belong to the compact, which makes the transition straightforward, but it is a change of licensing board rather than a formality. Do it before you start working there.
How much of my day does a student really take?
One clinic day each week across a term, with the visible cost concentrated at the beginning. The opening fortnight runs slower while your documentation and pace get learned, after which most preceptors find the rotation roughly neutral, with the student collecting histories and drafting notes for you to review and sign.
